In Cateura, a group of female artisans led by Librada Leguizamón transforms discarded materials into delicate jewelry through the Cateura Accessories project, promoting creative recycling and women’s economic empowerment.

Located near the Cateura landfill, this innovative project emerged with a dual mission: turning waste into beautiful handcrafted jewelry and empowering local women. In a country where gender disparities remain a significant concern, this initiative not only focuses on sustainability but also plays a crucial role in advancing women’s economic independence.

According to the 2023 Permanent Household Survey, Paraguay’s female employment rate stands at 54.4%, with women earning 23% less than men for paid work, as reported by the National Institute of Statistics (INE). In this context, promoting women’s economic empowerment becomes essential for improving both individual and community well-being.

Cateura Accessories was launched in 2019 through a partnership between various organizations, including the Mil Solidarios Association, the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), and civil society groups. The project has trained over 1,000 women from the Bañado Sur community—many of them mothers—in artisanal skills and waste management, turning discarded materials into unique jewelry pieces.

One of the most prominent participants is Librada Leguizamón, a mother of seven and grandmother of nine, who leads the artisans with dedication and passion. Her day begins at 3:30 a.m., accompanying her son to football practice, demonstrating her commitment not only as a mother but also as an entrepreneur and community leader. For Librada, the project has become more than a job—it’s a life mission.

Initially, the project posed significant challenges, as many artisans had no prior experience in jewelry making. However, their perseverance and adaptability helped them overcome obstacles and develop unique skills. Their upcoming collection, Juky, draws inspiration from contemporary trends and cultural beauty, reflecting their pride and dedication to craftsmanship.

The perseverance of these women is even more remarkable given the challenges they face in their community, including gender-based violence. Librada and her fellow artisans confront this reality with courage, striving to build a better future for themselves and their families. Their success serves as a powerful example of breaking cycles of violence and promoting self-sufficiency.

Cateura Accessories has gained international recognition in countries such as Peru, Italy, and Spain. One of Librada’s most memorable experiences was traveling to Spain, where she expanded her knowledge of recycling techniques and waste management. These opportunities not only enhance her work but also inspire her ongoing mission to turn waste into beauty and empower other women in the process.
